April good month for hotels
Balearic hotels were 63.3 percent occupied in April, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which also reported a rise of 2.7 percent in hotel prices during last month. This rise in the number of overnight stays was due to the effect of Easter, which was in April in 2006 but in March in 2005. Taking the two months together, the number of overnight stays rose by 12 percent in comparison with 2005. Security improvements at Palma airport
The start of work to install new security checkpoints on the fourth floor of the terminal building at Palma airport will, according to AENA , allow more freedom to passengers throughout the whole of the commercial area, and also allow them to move more quickly through the control channels. This year the battle to protect the Balearics from forest fire will be reinforced by a high technology fire simulator. Font explained that the simulator will then be able to provide fire fighters with vital information about the fire in question, its characteristics, the direction is it likely to move in and therefore enable fire fighting teams on the ground and in the air to tackle the blaze more effectively and move into strategic positions to protect possible areas in danger.

USS Nassau in the Bay of Palma
The United States Navy's amphibious landing ship USS Nassau dropped anchor in the Bay of Palma yesterday at the start of a five day Easter visit.
The USS Nassau is, according to the American media, on her way home with other Norfolk, Virgina-based ships from the USS Nassau Expeditionary Strike Group, after more than four months of serving in the Middle East combating piracy and working alongside Iraq's military forces. Ferry company interested in new passenger terminal
The Trasmediterránea ferry company is seeking the concession for the new passenger terminal due to be built in the port of Palma.
According to company chairman Juan Saez, it will lead to a “significant increase” in the number of passengers between the Peninsula and Majorca.
The new terminal depends on the approval of the Master Plan for the port, which will govern its development for the next 30 years. It has to be approved by the central government, with agreement from the regional government and the Palma city council. Saez said it was very important for the ferry company to take part in the development of the port of Palma.

Palma 13th busiest airport in EU in 2004
Palma airport occupies position 13 in the list of 20 busiest airports in the EU in 2004, handling 20.3 million passengers, about 6.5 percent more than the year before, according to figures published yesterday by the Statistics Office of the EU (Eurostat). On the list, Barajas airport in Madrid is in 5th place by virtue of the amount of passengers it handled in 2004, which was 38.1 million, some 7.9 percent more than in 2003. London's Heathrow airport was the busiest airport in the European Union with 67.1 million passengers , followed by Paris's Charles de Gaulle airport with 50.9 million, then Frankfurt with 50.7 million , and Amsterdam with 42.4 million . Barcelona's El Prat airport had a bigger rise in passengers than Madrid in percentage terms , although its total number of passengers was less at 24.3 million.
Madrid's Barajas airport was the only Spanish airport appearing on the list for air freight traffic, handling 0.3 million tonnes.
In the whole of the EU the volume of air freight traffic rose by 9.6 percent to 10.7 million tonnes.
Almost half of this volume was handled by British or German airports.

Palmanova-Paguera motorway ready by June
The Balearic Ministry of Public Works estimates that the work currently in progress to extend the motorway from Palmanova to Paguera will be finished in June. This stretch of the motorway is 9'000 metres long and the work has cost 49 million euros.
This road carries up to 30'000 vehicles daily and, according the the Minister, is one of the black spots of the road network from their point of view. The junction of this road with the PM-1, which connects Palma and Palmanova, creates continuous long delays at the point where the two roads join.
The motorway will have four links at different levels which will connect with Cala Figuera, Santa Ponsa, Costa de la Calma and Paguera.
During her visit yesterday, the Minister opened a branch of the motorway in the north of Paguera which allows access to this area for vehicles travelling from Andratx to Palma. According to the Ministry, until now this exit only allowed access to Paguera to those vehicles travelling towards Andratx from Palma.

New superferry on the route Palma-Barcelona
The new superferry, owned by the company Balearia, came into operation yesterday between Palma and Barcelona.She has a capacity of 2'000 linear metres of roll on-roll off cargo and cars and can carry about 400 passengers. She will make one round trip per day between the two cities.
The superferry, which has a service speed of 24 knots, will make the crossing in just over six hours.
She will leave Palma at 12.30pm and Barcelona at 11.15pm, according to sources at the company.
The new ship is of modern construction, is 180 metres long and has cabins and armchairs for the comfort of her passengers who will also have all sorts of facilities and services available to them on board. Balearia is also constructing two more large superferries.
With this new service, Balearia completes its complement of routes offered to, from and between the Balearics.

Therefore it will be easy to promote the Balearics as a destination for honeymooners, a spokesman said. On the other hand, for this promotion to be a success it is necessary to offer more than sun, sea and sand, because China has many of its own seaside destinations. A holiday destination maintains its popularity by offering the maximum variety at the point of sale.
